HMPE – A Superior Strength Netting Twine Option

HMPE (high modulus polyethylene) fiber is also commonly referred to as UHMWPE (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene) in a braided form has a weight-to-strength ratio that is 8-15 times stronger than steel.  Because of its strength and relatively lightweight, it is extremely versatile as an alternative netting material with many commercial, industrial, and recreational applications.

Typically, HMPE netting is coated in a urethane coating to enhance wearability, UV resistance, and abrasion resistance while providing more knot-holding capacity.

Primary Advantages of HMPE Netting:

  • Made from high-modulus polyethylene
  • High strength and tenacity – up to 15 times stronger than steel
  • Relatively lightweight compared to other common options
  • Minimal stretch and elongation upon installation
  • Long lasting and durable when properly manufactured and installed
  • UV and chemical resistant

Primary Disadvantages of HMPE Netting:

  •  HMPE is relatively costly on a per-pound basis compared to other options, such as nylon netting
  • HMPE netting products typically require depth stretching after fabrication to ensure the stability and integrity of the knots.
  • Due to its chemical makeup, HMPE netting tends to have a “plasticky” feel, particularly compared to standard nylon netting options.
